Red Line Metro Rapist Sentenced to Two Life Terms

Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Cheryl McCally sentenced the man who raped a woman at knifepoint in broad daylight on Metro’s Red Line to two consecutive life sentences behind bars.

Friday’s sentence comes after a jury found John Prentice Hicks, 41, guilty of first degree rape and sex offense to the first degree earlier this year.

Before McCally delivered a sentence, the victim addressed Hicks in court.  In an emotional statement, she asked, “why would you let me suffer?”

According to court documents, the victim was approached by Hicks aboard a northbound Red Line train.  As the train serviced the Forest Glen station, he grabbed a knife and forced her to a different train to perform a sex act.

During the sentencing, Judge McCally said the community members who ride the Metro were also victimized.

“People have the right to feel safe on the Metro,” she said.  “You made sure it wasn’t safe on April 12.”
