Record-Setting Participation Highlights Mah Jongg Tourney at Riderwood

Enthusiasts traveled from as far as Pennsylvania to make the 8th Annual Riderwood Mah Jongg Tournament a record-setting event.

All told, 148 players entered the five-round competition at the Erickson Living retirement community on August 13. It was the largest field in the history of the competition.

For Barbara Breit, a resident of Riderwood, the tournament’s popularity is no surprise.

“Mah Jongg is a very challenging game because every hand is unique,” stated Ms. Breit. “And on this yearly occasion, residents and friends simply enjoy spending time together in a relaxed setting at Riderwood.”

Governed in accordance with rules established by the National Mah Jongg League, ten cash prizes and twenty-five door prizes were presented during the program.

Following morning play, participants dined on lunch specially prepared by the Riderwood Catering Team before resuming action in the afternoon.

Coordinating the Mah Jongg tourney is a natural fit for Ms. Breit, who has been involved in the event since its inception.

“I’ve been playing since I was fifteen when my mother taught me,” she noted. “In turn, I’ve given each of my four granddaughters a Mah Jongg set as a gift for their respective showers. They like to play so the tradition remains strong in my family.”

The tournament was held as a fundraiser for the community’s Benevolent Care Fund.
