Reading Program Works to Close Achievement Gap (Video)

Takoma Park residents are hosting their first annual summer program at the Essex House apartment complex geared towards improving literacy.

The Lunch and Learn summer program, which started in the first week of July was organized by Takoma Park Councilmember Jarrett Smith (Ward 5).

The collaboration brought together non-profit organizations, community members, and Montgomery County Public Schools.

Smith says there is an achievement gap in education for minorities in MCPS. He adds hosting the program at the Essex House, located at 7777 Maple Ave., was a critical component which helped to increase participation from parents.

Although the achievement gap in education has improved,  according to a recent study release by MCPS. Smith says programs like the one he organized can increase progress.

The Lunch and Learn summer program is scheduled to end two weeks before school starts.
