Ravel, Bartok and Piazzolla Open “sfz salon series” at Kentlands Mansion
Gaithersburg’s new “sfz salon” concert series begins with Beyond Folk Oct. 27 at 3 p.m. at Kentlands Mansion, 320 Kent Square Road. The concert will include Ravel’s Tzigane, Bartok’s Contrasts and Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango performed by musicians Wenyin Chan, Jeremy Eig, Jennifer Kim, Alex Peh, and Douglas Rogers. Admission is $25, $23 for city of Gaithersburg residents. Wine will be available for an additional cost. Tickets may be purchased by phone at 301.258.6394, online at www.gaithersburgmd.gov/RecXpress, or at the adjacent Arts Barn Ticket Office, 311 Kent Square Road.
The “sfz salon series” is named after the “Sforzando,” represended as “sfz” on sheet music, which indicates a strong, sudden accent on a note or chord. This new series is designed to provide an energetic, inspirational and creative sanctuary for both artists and the audience, encouraging great music and lively discussion during four distinct programs. Each program will also feature two highlighted wines, with a consultant on hand to help the audience explore them.
Wenyin Chan

Wenyin Chan (Piano) Taiwanese pianist Wenyin Chan has performed throughout the United States and abroad, including such venues as Carnegie Hall, Steinway Hall, Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, Minnesota Orchestra Hall, and the Taiwan National Recital Hall. As a concerto soloist, she has performed with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Washington Sinfonietta and Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra, among others. Chan has been a prizewinner in numerous competitions, including the Taiwan National Music Competition, Taipei Chopin Piano Competition, Moscow International Chopin Piano Competition for Young Artists, Steinway Society of Massachusetts Piano Competition, Missouri Southern International Piano Competition, International Piano-e-Competition, among others. She studied at the Curtis Institute of Music, where she worked with pianist Peter Serkin. After receiving her Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute, she continued her studies under the tutelage of Claude Frank at Yale School of Music, where she received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 2012. Chan has also worked with renowned pianists, including Boris Berman, Peter Frankl, Gary Graffman, Leon Fleisher, Jerome Lowenthal, Robert McDonald, and Menahem Pressler, and has been a faculty member at the Levine School of Music since 2007.
Jeremy Eig

Jeremy Eig (Clarinet) Clarinetist Jeremy Eig recently completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Stony Brook University. An accomplished chamber musician, he has won prizes at the Fischoff, Coleman, and Yellow Springs competitions, and performed with pianist Claude Frank at the New School’s Schneider Concert Series. As an educator, he has given masterclasses at Davidson College, Furman University and Grand Valley State University, and served as a teaching assistant at Yale and Stony Brook Universities. An active orchestral musician, Eig has performed with the Cleveland Orchestra and Kansas City Symphony and in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Seoul Arts Center, Shanghai Grand Theatre, and the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing. He holds a Master of Music degree and Artist Diploma from Yale University, a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Michigan, and is a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy. Eig’s principal teachers include David Shifrin, Alan Kay, Fred Ormand, and Richard Hawkins. He is an enlisted member of the US Navy Band, is the director of the Clarinet Commission Collective and the arranger/editor for JTown Publications.
Jennifer Kim

Jennifer Kim (Violin) Jennifer Kim, a native of McLean, VA, is a versatile violinist who performs throughout the United States and the world. She is a member of the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra/Washington National Opera Orchestra, American Symphony Orchestra and Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her orchestral career, she has performed chamber music at the Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center and Music Center at Strathmore. Kim has performed with New World Symphony, Pacific Music Festival Orchestra, Verbier Festival Orchestra, and has participated in masterclasses at Mozarteum and Great Mountains Music Festival. Also active as a studio musician, she has recorded on major motion picture soundtracks Doubt, Julie/Julia, True Grit, Tower Heist, and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. An avid educator, Kim teaches violin at George Mason University School of Music in addition to having taught at the 92nd Street Y and New York City Public School 1 as a Morse Fellow from the Juilliard School. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Columbia University and a Master of Music degree in violin performance at the Juilliard School. Kim holds a Suzuki Violin certification from School for Strings, New York City, and her teachers include Ricardo Cyncynates, Naoko Tanaka, Lisa Kim, and Hyo Kang. She is an exclusive Andrea Rosin artist and performs on a 1907 Vincenzo Postiglione violin.
Alex Peh

Alex Peh (Piano) Praised by Peter Jacobi of the Bloomington Herald Times for his “buoyancy and finesse,” Alex Peh has performed throughout the United States as a versatile recitalist and lecturer. He has pursued projects ranging from lecture recitals on Franz Liszt’s lesser known song transcriptions performed at the Austrian Embassy to performances of Stravinsky’s Petrouchka set to original choreography. As a recitalist, Peh has performed in Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Unity Temple. He performed Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with conductor Joel Lazar and the Washington Sinfonietta and will be returning to perform Mendelssohn’s G Minor Concerto in the 2013-2014 season. Peh is an assistant professor of piano at the State University of New York in New Paltz and was on faculty at the Levine School of Music, where he founded and directed Piano Squared, a high school summer chamber music festival and performance tour for talented pianists. As the recipient of both the Liberace fellowship and Laura Winkelman Scholarship, he received a B.M and M.M. in piano performance from Northwestern University where he graduated with honors. He earned his Doctorate in Piano Performance from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and has worked closely with Arnaldo Cohen, Dr. Sylvia Wang, Menahem Pressler, and Evelyne Brancart. Peh is the curator for the sfz salon series.
Douglas Rogers

Douglas Rogers (Guitar) Douglas Rogers is a frequent performer throughout the mid-Atlantic region. He is often a featured artist on 90.3FM WHRO’s Silver Moonbeams, a classical guitar program produced and hosted by Bill Hicok. Hicok has described Rogers’ performance of Napoleon Coste as “masterful” and his concerts as “beautifully performed.” Rogers is on the guitar faculty of the Levine School of Music and holds a Masters of Music in Guitar Performance and Pedagogy along with a Bachelor of Music in Guitar Performance from the Peabody Conservatory of Music of the Johns Hopkins University. He has studied with Julian Gray, Ray Chester and Tim Olbryk, and he has participated as a performer in Manuel Barrueco, Carlo Domeniconi, Lorenzo Micheli, and Matteo Mela master classes. Rogers has premiered several new prizewinning chamber music compositions, including Hyun Kyung Kim’s Sonnet and Angel Lam’s Images of Water. He also studied composition with Thomas Benjamin at Peabody and continues to compose today. Each summer he returns to his hometown of Newport News, Virginia to give an annual guitar recital at Denbigh Presbyterian Church. A collection is taken up at each recital in order to raise funds for a missionary in Haiti. Rogers plays on a 2000 David Daily guitar.
