Rachel Carson Elementary School Hosts Career Day for Fifth Graders (VIDEO & PHOTOS)
Rachel Carson Elementary School’s fifth grade class celebrated Career Day on June 7th.
PTA President Paula Ross said the students are studying careers in their curriculum unit and this was a chance for the fifth graders to ask questions and hear directly from people working in a variety of professional fields before they head off to middle school.
The professionals were divided into the following panel sessions during the morning event: Telling a Story: Journalism/Writing Careers, Following Your Passion and Building Your Own Business, Careers in Government, Careers in Financial Services and Math, Science and Technology Careers, and Giving Back to the Community thru Nonprofit Careers.
There were 20 professionals who participated, including author Andra Abramson, County Councilmember Craig Rice, State Senator Cheryl Kagan, Gaithersburg City Councilmember Rob Wu, Gaithersburg Planning and Code Administration Director John Schlichting, Secret Service agent Matthew Hendrickson, veterinarian Dr. Matt Felrice, Georgetown University’s Dr. Donna Buckley, My Big Finds store owner Jodi Rapaport, real estate agent Meredith Fogle, journalist Sonya Burke (that’s me) and more.
“We were excited to be able to bring them some real life people to speak with them about those careers,” said Ross, who said the teachers seemed to think it was a successful learning experience.
