Rachel Carson E.S. PTA Sets Meeting to Discuss School Capacity
The Rachel Carson Elementary School PTA has a meeting planned for Nov. 5 and top on the discussion list likely will be a recently-released proposal from Superintendent Dr. Joshua Starr that names redistricting as a possible solution to crowding issues at the Gaithersburg school.
RCES PTA President Angelo Whitten told MyMCMedia Tuesday that the PTA realizes that redistricting is always an option the school system has to deal with overcrowding. But, he said the recommendations released Tuesday by Starr will likely be the focus of much of the discussion in the meeting at 7 p.m. at the school.
As part of a $220.8 million funding request to be added to the six-year school construction budget, Rachel Carson would get a feasibility study to look at how to deal with crowding at the school. Rachel Carson is said to be more than 300 students over capacity this year. The school uses 11 relocatable classrooms to cope with the over-enrollment.
But, those portable classrooms have taken over a huge part of the school’s playground. In fact, an online petition, a calls for Gaithersburg City and MCPS officials to make some short-term and long term changes to alleviate the crowding at the school. The petition cites safety concerns, early lunch times and inadequate play space. It has just over 200 signatures.
Starr’s request says that the RCES site is not “a viable location for an expansion project” so he is looking to explore additions to Jones Lane Elementary School in Darnestown and DuFief Elementary School in Gaithersburg to alleviate the crowding at RCES.
Rachel Carson Principal Lawrence Chep was not immediately available for comment.
