Public Safety Committee to Discuss Crime Stats, Emergency Preparedness

The Montgomery County Council’s Public Safety Committee will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 11 to receive an update on County crime statistics.

Among the issues that will be discussed is what impact the first two years of a three-year program of increased staffing has had on crime in the County. On the 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, the committee also will be updated on the County’s emergency preparedness programs.

The Public Safety Committee, which is chaired by Phil Andrews and includes Councilmembers Roger Berliner and Marc Elrich, will meet in the in the Seventh Floor Hearing Room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. The meeting will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM—Cable Channel 6 on Comcast and RCN, Channel 30 on Verizon). The broadcast also will be streamed at:

Chris Voss, the manager of the County’s Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, and Fire Chief Steve Lohr will be among those attending the update on emergency preparedness.

One issue that will be addressed is the County’s emergency alert system that has more than 224,000 subscribers—the largest number of any jurisdiction in the Washington metropolitan region. The County is in the process of moving Alert Montgomery to a new platform, with a likely launch in October.
