Public Hearing on Special Appropriation to Aid Homeless

The Montgomery County Council will hold a public hearing at 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 3, regarding a special appropriation of $649,325 to the Fiscal Year 2014 County Government operating budget that would be spent by the Department of Housing and Community Affairs to find permanent supportive housing for medically vulnerable, chronically homeless individuals. Call 240.777.7910 to obtain a copy of the bill.

The funding, which would come from the County’s General Fund Reserves, would support the County’s commitment to the 100,000 Homes Campaign. That campaign, which has more than 200 communities across the nation participating, seeks to find permanent housing for homeless individuals and families who have been unable, or unwilling for a variety of reason, to get established in permanent housing.

100k home campaignThese funds will help place people who have been prioritized as the most in need based on the County’s recent survey of the homeless population. This survey was conducted by more than 100 volunteers and gained information on age, health, mental health and other conditions that may be contributing to the person’s ongoing homelessness.

The public hearing will be held in the Third Floor Hearing Room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. The meeting will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM—Cable Channel 6 on Comcast and RCN, Channel 30 on Verizon).

Those interested in testifying at the public hearing can sign up by calling 240.777.7803.
