Pools Open for Summer Season (PHOTO)
Memorial Day weekend traditionally marks the official opening of the summer swim season in Montgomery County.
On Saturday morning, the county’s Recreation and General Services departments celebrated the opening of the newly renovated Western County Outdoor Pool with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The pool is located at 20151 Fisher Avenue in Poolesville.
According to a county news release, renovations at the pool began in September 2015 and included the construction of a new 3,160-square foot “spray” ground, and renovations of the bathhouse, snack bar and filter room. In addition, upgrades to the site and buildings, including the parking lot and pool grounds, have improved accessibility.
The accessible upgrades at the site include drinking fountains, pool deck showers, restrooms and shower facilities, and an accessible route to a shade structure. Other system upgrades include new light fixtures and in-pool lighting, a new dive board and a new leisure pool slide. Renovation costs were approximately $3.85 million.
Montgomery County Recreation has six additional outdoor pools which opened at noon on Saturday. The outdoor pools will be open weekends and holidays until June 20, when they switch to a daily schedule. The Bethesda Pool opened the lap, training and tot pools today but the Bethesda main pool will be closed for repairs through June 3.
The outdoor pools include:
- Bethesda Pool, 301.652.1598, Little Falls Parkway and Hillandale Road;
- Germantown Outdoor Pool, 301.601.1690, 18905 Kingsview Road;
- Long Branch Pool, 301.431.5700, 8700 Piney Branch Road, Silver Spring;
- Martin Luther King Jr. Outdoor Pool, 301.622.1090, 1201 Jackson Road, Silver Spring;
- Wheaton/Glenmont Pool, 301.929.5460, 12621 Dalewood Drive, Wheaton;
- Upper County Outdoor Pool, 301.840.2446, 8211 Emory Grove Road, Gaithersburg; and
- Western County Outdoor Pool, 301.349.2217, 20151 Fisher Avenue, Poolesville.
As the summer swim season gets underway, residents are encouraged to become familiar with the safety rules posted at the pools and to closely supervise children around the pool.
Because safety is the priority for Recreation Department programs, it may be necessary to temporarily halt admission to pools when capacity is reached. Additional swimmers will be admitted as soon as space becomes available.
