Police Officer Struck by Car

Police are investigating a series of car accidents that occurred on Oct. 2 on a local ramp during rush hour and that sent an off-duty Montgomery County police officer to the hospital with injuries.

At approximately 5:15 pm, the Montgomery County Emergency Communication Center was notified of two separate vehicle collisions that occurred on the ramp from eastbound MD 118 onto southbound I-270 in Germantown, police said.

Initial reports stated that a slippery substance was on the ramp and mixed with rain was causing vehicles to slide off the roadway, according to police.

Off-duty Montgomery County Police Officer Fabio Chung, a five and a half year veteran assigned to patrol in the 3rd District, was in the area and responded to the scene to assist.

While Officer Chung was outside of his marked police cruiser, another vehicle traveling down the ramp also slid off the roadway and struck Ofc. Chung and his cruiser, police said.

Officer Chung was transported to an area hospital where he was treated and released. No other injuries were reported from the scene. Maryland State Police are handling the investigation of the two initial collisions on the ramp, and the Montgomery County Police Traffic Division is handling the investigation of Officer Chung’s collision.
