Police: Man Tries to Use Fake $100 Bill, Then Pass Off as an Officer
Bethesda police district officers are trying to identify a man who tried to pass a counterfeit $100 U.S. bill at a North Bethesda business and identified himself as a police officer when a store employee raised questions about the bill.
About 6 p.m. Feb. 11, the man tried to pay for frozen yogurt at the Sweet Frog at 11520 Rockville Pike with a $100 bill, police said.
The store employee tried to determine the authenticity of the bill using a counterfeit detector pen. The pen indicated that the bill was fake and upon further inspection, the employee noted some irregularities on the currency.
The clerk told the man that the money was fake and that he was calling the police. The suspect then produced what appeared to be a police badge and said he was a police officer and would take the bill back, police said.
The employee kept the bill and the man ran from the store.
Anyone with information about the man is asked to the call Montgomery County Police at 240-773-6710. Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477). Crime Solvers will pay a cash reward of up to $10,000 for information provided to them that leads to an arrest in this case.
