Update: Victim Identified in Germantown Shooting
Update Friday: The dead man found in Germantown on Wednesday has been identified as Maurice Cortez Mercer, 30, of the 12500 block of Cross Ridge Way, Montgomery County police said.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has ruled his death as a homicide by gunshot wound.
About 3:51 p.m. Wednesday, Germantown District officers responded to a home in the 12500 block of Cross Ridge Way, police said.
They were told of a suspicious situation — a man was unresponsive, police said.
“We get the call, and we don’t know what we’re walking into, and this is what we find,” Officer Rick Goodale said.
Police have not released the man’s name.
He had trauma to his body, police said.
This death is being investigated as a homicide, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore will conduct an autopsy to decide the manner and cause of death, police said.
“The ME will officially rule on whether it’s a homicide,” Goodale said. He said police had already begun a homicide investigation, thinking it’s better to investigate it as one and it not turn out to be a homicide than the other way around.
More details will be released as they become available.
Detectives are urging anyone who may have information regarding this investigation to contact the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070 or contact Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477). Callers may remain anonymous.
