Police Investigate Sexual Assault

Montgomery County detectives are investigating a sexual assault that occurred last night on the Capital Crescent Trail in Bethesda.

At 7:13 p.m. on Sunday, October 21, county police and the Maryland National-Capital Park Police (Montgomery County Division) responded to a call for an assault in the 4900 block of Brooke Way Drive in Bethesda.

According to police, a 21-year-old jogger stated that she had been running on the trail between MacArthur Boulevard and Massachusetts Avenue at approximately 7 p.m. when she stopped to allow a group of deer to cross the trail.  While she was stopped, police said, the woman was struck on her head from behind and lost consciousnesses for a short time.

When she regained consciousness, she found herself on the ground and off the trail in the woods, police said.

According to police, the woman jogger was able to walk back to the trail and verbally call for help.  Police said a male jogger heard her and assisted her off the trail to Brooke Way Drive where they asked a homeowner to call police.

The victim was transported to a hospital with a head injury and remains in the hospital this morning. Police said she is in serious but stable condition and has been able to speak with detectives.  She has described her attacker as a white male in his 20′s who was wearing dark clothing, police said.
