Driver Dies After Car Hits Tree in Chevy Chase

UPDATED July 15, 2:30 p.m.The driver of a car that struck a tree off of  Beach Drive and Wyndale Road in Chevy Chase has died.

Police say Malcolm Lawrence Gardner, 25, of the 4300 block of 14th Street NW in Washington, D.C.  was driving his Mini Cooper  south on Beach Drive July 11 when the vehicle crossed the double yellow line and struck a tree near the westbound shoulder.  Fire/rescue personnel transported Gardner to Suburban Hospital where he died July 14.

Montgomery County police are investigating a serious, single-vehicle collision that occurred at 8:40 p.m. on July 11 at Beach Drive and Wyndale Road in Chevy Chase.

Police said the 25-year-old male driver was transported to Suburban Hospital where he continues to be treated for his injuries.

According to police, the preliminary investigation  indicates that the driver was traveling southbound on Beach Drive in a blue, 2005, Mini Cooper.  For reasons still under investigation, police said the vehicle crossed the double yellow line and struck a tree near the westbound shoulder.
