It happened shortly before 8 a.m. in the area of Old Georgetown Road and Battery Lane on Tuesday morning in Bethesda.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicates that the pedestrian, identified by police as 67-year-old Devika Gunasekere of Rockville, was crossing Old Georgetown Road from west to east at Battery Lane.  Detectives believe that Gunasekere was in the area of a marked crosswalk.  A Montgomery County Ride On Bus was attempting to make a left turn from westbound Battery Lane onto southbound Old Georgetown Road when it collided with Gunasekere, police said.

Gunasekere was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.  Gunasekere died from her injuries at the hospital on Tuesday evening.

The four passengers on the bus at the time of the collision were uninjured, according to police.  The bus driver was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injures.

Detectives continue to investigate what the traffic signal and pedestrian crossing signal showed at the time of the collision.

This collision remains under investigation.  Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240.773.6620.
