Police Investigate Clarksburg Death

The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) is investigating the death of a Clarksburg man who died in police custody.

Police said their case began on Oct. 8 at 4:45 p.m. in the 23400 block of Tailor Shop Place in Clarksburg. Officers were called to the residence for the report of a resident who was being violent and exhibiting erratic behavior, police said.

When officers arrived on the scene to investigate, police said, they were told that the subject had threatened two of his roommates with weapons. Officers determined that an assault had occurred and attempted to arrest the subject. The subject became violent and resisted the arrest, police said. Officers used OC spray (also known as pepper spray) in order to gain control of the subject, according to a MCPD news release.

Police said fire rescue units were called to treat the suspect’s exposure to the spray, which is protocol for the department.

Shortly after the fire rescue crews left, police said the suspect started to lose consciousness and they again requested assistance from fire-rescue. Police said the suspect was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division were contacted to conduct a death investigation.

Police have identified the man as 39-year-old Nathan Jones of Clarksburg.
