UPDATED: Police Arrest Suspect Involved in 2014 Carjacking in Bethesda (PHOTO)

UPDATE Detectives of the Montgomery County Police Department-Major Crimes Division have charged Wanya Simms, of Chesapeake Street SE in Washington, DC with armed carjacking. The carjacking happened on Nov. 5, 2014.

According to a news release, police are still investigating the identities of two other suspects involved in the crime.

Investigators found DNA evidence from the vehicle and entered it into a national database for analysis. Montgomery County Police were notified that the DNA found belonged to Simms. Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect on July 14. Simms was arrested by detectives on Nov. 23 on strength of the warrant after he was released from incarceration in Washington, DC on unrelated charges.

He has been transported to the Central Processing Unit and ordered held on a $500,000 bond.

ORIGINAL POST 11.6.15 Montgomery County Police are investigating an armed carjacking that occurred last night in the 7800 block of Hampden Street in Bethesda.

Police said an 18-year-old was parking her dark red Volvo XC60 on the street and was using her cell phone when a masked suspect approached the vehicle and opened the driver’s side door.

According to police, the suspect place a handgun to the victim’s head and demanded that she get out of the SUV. Police said a second suspect opened the front passenger side door and stole a bag that was lying on the front passenger seat. A third suspect was also present during the carjacking, according to police.

Police said a lookout for the car was broadcast to officers at 6:55 p.m. on Nov. 5 and an officer located the vehicle with MD tag 1AE3792 moving in the area of 16th Street and East-West Highway in Silver Spring. Police attempted to stop the vehicle but it fled. Officers lost sight of the vehicle in the area of 14th Street and Primrose Road NW in Washington, D.C.

Detectives continue to investigate this carjacking. Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call the Major Crimes Division at 240.773.5070. Crime Solvers will pay a cash reward of up to $10,000 for information provided that leads to an arrest and/or indictment for this felony crime.

Anyone who observes the stolen vehicle, a 2011, dark red Volvo XC60 with MD tag: 1AE3792, is asked to immediately call 911.
