Police Captain Don Johnson is Retiring (PHOTO)

Montgomery County Police Captain Don Johnson, the 3rd District Commander, is retiring after 29 years on the job.

Johnson was hired by the Montgomery County Police Department in 1985 when “Don Johnson” was already a household name due to the popularity of the television show, Miami Vice, starring the actor with the same name.

This link to pop culture and policing still brings questions and jokes about his name today, but police say Captain Don Johnson has earned his excellent reputation.

Promoted to Captain in 2007, Johnson was immediately selected by Chief Manger to run what is arguably the busiest and most complex police district in Montgomery County- the 3rd District Station in Silver Spring. Normally, newly promoted captains are not assigned as district commanders, but Johnson’s outstanding accomplishments and talents were recognized by Chief Manger. Johnson must have done something right, as the Chief continued to hold him in that position for the last seven years. Johnson did leave his place as Commander to become acting assistant chief for six months during 2012 and 2013.

When asked how he manages his time of being a husband, a father to six children, and a district commander, Commander Johnson said, “I’ve been blessed with the best wife and family anyone could ever have.”

Don Johnson’s last day is scheduled to be June 10. From here he moves on to pursue another one of his passions – fishing.

For years he has “captained” a fishing boat on the Chesapeake Bay during his free time, but now he will do this full-time. That’s right, he’ll still be a captain –the difference being that he won’t be working the streets of Silver Spring anymore, but he will be fishing the waters of the Chesapeake.
