Montgomery County NAACP to Host Poetry Read-In on Saturday

The Montgomery County National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) will host a poetry read-in on Saturday in Silver Spring . The event is part of the Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological, Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) and will take place at the GapBuster Learning Center located inside United Methodist Church on 33 University Boulevard in Silver Spring.

The read-in will present an opportunity for student poets and performing artists in Montgomery County to showcase their craft. Local poet and NAACP member Jeremiah Floyd and special guest Jonathan Legesse, a member of President Obama’s My Brothers’ Keeper Initiative will give remarks during the event. Previous winners of ACT-SO’s 2014 and 2015 competition will also recite poetry during the read-in.

Pat Price is the Chair of ACT-SO.

“The Poetry Read-In is a unique opportunity to encourage and showcase our student talents as well as engage the larger community and promote literacy and Black History in a family-friendly event,” Price said in a press release.
