Platt Says He Won’t Seek Re-Election to District 17 Seat

On his Facebook page, Del. Andrew Platt announced Tuesday night he would not be seeking re-election to his District 17 seat in the Maryland House of Delegates, preferring to work on issues from outside the legislature.
“I do not make this decision lightly, but it is the right one for me, personally and professionally,” Platt wrote.
The first-term Democrat represents a district that includes Gaithersburg and Rockville.
“As the son of a mailman and a mom who made minimum wage, I’ve spent my time in office fighting against institutional inertia and structural forces to reform our politics so that working families don’t get further marginalized by unfettered capitalism and the exacerbating social stratification we see happening around us,” he wrote.
“Given the corrosive effect of money in politics and the broken incentive structure of who public policy gets made for, I think I will be able to better work on these issues from the outside and not as a state legislator,” he continued.
District 17 is also represented by Del. Kumar Barve of Gaithersburg and Del. Jim Gilchrist of Rockville. Barve chairs the House Environment and Transportation Committee; Gilchrist is also a member of the committee.
Julie Palakovich Carr, a member of the Rockville Mayor and Council, has filed to run for a District 17 delegates seat.
On Monday, the blog “A Miner Detail” reported that school board member Rebecca Smondrowski is considering giving up her plans to run for an at-large seat on the Montgomery County Council to run for District 17.
