Pepco Needs Your Help for Peak Savings Day Test on Sept. 18
Pepco is asking all of its customers to conserve energy from 2 – 3 p.m. on Thursday as part of a test event required by PJM, the Regional Transmission Organization or grid operator for Maryland and the District of Columbia. The power supply in the region is expected to be sufficient to meet demand.
For Pepco Maryland customers, the Maryland Public Service Commission has approved the Peak Energy Savings Credit program. It rewards Pepco Maryland customers by offering bill credits when Maryland customers reduce energy use at home during Peak Savings Days. Pepco Maryland customers will automatically receive a phone call the evening before giving the time for reducing energy use. Customers can also choose to be notified by email or text.
Pepco Maryland customers who reduce energy use below their specified baseline during the specific hours of the Peak Savings Day can receive a credit of $1.25 off their bill for every kilowatt hour (kWh) of reduced usage through the Peak Energy Savings Credit program.
For Maryland and District of Columbia customers participating in Pepco’s voluntary Energy Wise Rewards program, a conservation period will be called from 2 – 3 p.m. Thursday. This means that Pepco will cycle the participants’ air conditioner compressors off and on for short intervals during this one hour test. Because the air conditioner fans will continue to run, most customers will not notice a temperature change in their home, and those who do should experience only a one to three-degree change. It may take up to a half-hour after the event ends at 3 p.m. for air conditioners to resume normal operations.
Peak Energy Savings Credit and Energy Wise Rewards are voluntary programs. Customers can learn more about Peak Energy Savings Credit by calling 1.855.730.PEAK or visit www.takecontrolmaryland.com/pesc.
