Pepco Issues Urgent Call to Conserve Electricity

Pepco and PJM Interconnection, the electricity grid operator for more than 61 million people in 13 states and the District of Columbia, are issuing an urgent appeal for Pepco customers to conserve electricity from 3 – 7 p.m. today and 6 – 9 a.m. Friday.

Image of electric meterThe call for conservation is prompted by the continuing extreme cold weather in the area and the unexpected loss of critical generating units outside the Pepco service area that provide power to the Mid-Atlantic region. Pepco does not own or operate generating units.

PJM is continuing to monitor system conditions and expectations, and we will provide updates to you as appropriate. PJM has issued a cold weather alert through Friday due to the extreme cold and the increased demand for electricity.

PJM and Pepco are asking customers to conserve electricity, if health permits, especially from 3 – 7 p.m. today and 6 – 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24.

Customers can take simple electricity conservation steps:

  • Set thermostats lower than usual, if health permits.
  • Postpone using major electric appliances such as stoves, dishwashers and clothes dryers until mid-day or after 9 p.m., when the demand for electricity decreases.
  • Turn off electric lights and appliances that you do not need or are not using.

Conserving electricity will help PJM ensure an adequate supply of electricity and prevents the need for additional operational or emergency actions. Pepco and PJM continue to carefully monitor the power supply conditions.
