Pepco Asks Customers To Conserve Energy on Tuesday

Pepco is asking its customers to conserve energy on Tuesday, July 21 as an increased demand for electricity throughout the Mid-Atlantic region is anticipated because of the heat wave. The power supply in the region is expected to be sufficient to meet anticipated high demand.

For Pepco’s Maryland customers, the Maryland Public Service Commission has approved Peak Energy Savings Credit. It rewards Pepco Maryland customers by offering bill credits when Maryland customers reduce energy use at home during Peak Savings Days. Tuesday’s Peak Savings Day conservation period will be called from 2-6 p.m.

Pepco Maryland customers will automatically receive a phone call giving the hours for reducing energy use. Customers can also choose to be notified by email or text.

For these customers who reduce energy use below their specified baseline during the specific hours of the Peak Savings Day can receive a credit of $1.25 off their bill for every kilowatt hour (kWh) of reduced usage, through the Peak Energy Savings Credit program.

For Maryland and District of Columbia customers participating in Pepco’s voluntary Energy Wise Rewards program, a conservation period will be called from 2-6 p.m., Tuesday. This means that Pepco will cycle the participants’ air conditioner compressors off and on for short intervals during these hours. Because the air conditioner fans will continue to run, most customers will not notice a temperature change in their home, and those who do should experience only a 1-to 3-degree change. It may take up to a half-hour after the event ends at 6 p.m. for air conditioners to resume normal operations.
