Pepco Asks Customers to Conserve Energy on 9/11

Updated
The call for load reduction has been extended two hours and will be in effect through 8 p.m. This means that Pepco will cycle Energy Wise Rewards participants’ air conditioner compressors off for short intervals during these hours. It may take up to a half-hour after the event ends for air conditioners to resume normal operations.

PJM, the organization that manages the high-voltage electric grid that serves 13 states including Maryland plus the District of Columbia, has extended the call for load reduction through 8 p.m. on September 11. For customers voluntarily enrolled in Pepco’s Energy Wise Rewards program in Maryland and the District of Columbia a conservation period beginning at 2 p.m. may now extend 8 p.m.

Because PJM requires this energy conservation period, program participants will not be able to opt out.

Pepco is asking its customers to conserve energy on Sept. 11, between the hours of 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. as an increased demand for electricity throughout the mid-Atlantic region is anticipated. The power supply in the region is expected to be sufficient to meet anticipated high demand.

For Pepco Maryland customers, the Maryland Public Service Commission has approved the Peak Energy Savings Credit. It rewards Pepco Maryland customers by offering bill credits when Maryland customers reduce energy use at home during Peak Savings Days. Pepco Maryland customers will automatically receive a phone call giving the hours for reducing energy use. Customers can also choose to be notified by email or text.

Pepco Maryland customers who reduce energy use below their specified baseline during the hours of 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. of the Peak Savings Day can receive a credit of $1.25 off their bill for every kilowatt-hour (kWh) of reduced usage, through the Peak Energy Savings Credit program.

For Maryland and District of Columbia customers participating in Pepco’s voluntary Energy Wise Rewards program a conservation period will be called from 2 p.m. – 6 p.m., on Wednesday. This means that Pepco will cycle the participants’ air conditioner compressors off and on for short intervals during these hours. Because the air conditioner fans will continue to run, however, most customers will not notice a temperature change in their home, and those who do should experience only a 1- to 3-degree change. It may take up to a half-hour after the event ends at 6 p.m. for air conditioners to resume normal operations.

Peak Energy Savings Credit and Energy Wise Rewards are voluntary programs. Customers can learn more about Peak Energy Savings Credit by calling 1.855.730.PEAK or visit takecontrolmaryland/pesc. To learn more about Energy Wise Rewards call 1.866.353.5798 or visit pepco.com/rewards.
