Parks Police Investigating Embezzlement from Foundation
Montgomery County’s Park Police is investigating an embezzlement of the Montgomery Parks Foundation, a parks police officer said Wednesday.
A lawyer representing the foundation said the loss is in the “six-figure range” and took place over several years. It was first detected in January, Lt. Jeffrey Coe said.
The foundation is a nonprofit that raises money for Montgomery County Parks.
Neither Coe nor attorney Donna McBride would describe the position the alleged embezzler had with the foundation, but both confirmed the person had access to the organization’s funds.
McBride said the person has legal representation.
“It is our understanding they plan to work with us so that every penny is paid back to the foundation,” she said.
Coe was asked if the police would need to call in forensic accountants.
“It may come to that, but right now we’re doing all the preliminary legwork on the investigation,” he said.
The embezzlement was first reported in the Source of the Spring, a local news website that covers Silver Spring.
