Paint Branch High Says Student Had Knife, Bullets

A Paint Branch High School student arrived at school about 8:30 a.m. Thursday with a pocket knife and six bullets, according to Montgomery County police and a letter from Montgomery County Public Schools.

School administration and security contacted police, who said the bullets were in a plastic sandwich bag.

Officers had no information that the student, 16, possessed a gun at the school, police said. Police found no firearm after searching the school and the student’s home.

The student was taken to the Silver Spring police district station and charged with possession of a dangerous weapon on school property, police said. He was released to the custody of his guardian.

The case will be referred to the Department of Juvenile Services for adjudication, police said.

The school is at 14121 Old Columbia Pike, Burtonsville.

“I want to ensure you that students and staff are safe and we are able to continue the instructional day. The student will be disciplined in accordance with MCPS policy,” Principal Myriam A. Yarbrough said in a letter that was sent to parents.

“This is a very serious matter and we ask that you remind your children that weapons of any kind are not allowed on school property. If your child becomes aware that someone at the school has a weapon, remind them to tell a member of the staff immediately. We are committed to maintaining a safe, secure learning environment for our students and staff every day. As always, we appreciate your support in keeping our school safe.
