Outer Loop of I-495 Closed After Tanker Overturns, Spills Hot Asphalt

Update at 5 p.m.:  All lanes of the outer loop of the Capital Beltway between Connecticut Avenue and Rockville Pike are open. The lanes were closed following an early morning tanker jackknifed and spilt hot liquid asphalt on the roadway.

Update at 2:21 p.m.:  Cleanup continues on the Capital Beltway this afternoon following the early morning spill of hot liquid asphalt when a tanker truck jackknifed and overturned. The three left lanes remain closed on the outer loop between Connecticut Avenue and Rockville Pike. The ramp to northbound I-270 is open.

 

Original post: A tanker carrying hot asphalt overturned on the Capital Beltway Thursday morning closing all lanes of the outer loop between Connecticut Avenue and Rockville Pike. Hazardous material crews were able to stop the leaking of liquid asphalt and diesel fuel from the tanker. The section of the beltway will be closed for an extended period for clean up of the asphalt spill.

Outer Loop traffic is being diverted to Rockville Pike at Exit 34. Drivers are able to return to the Beltway from Old Georgetown Road.

Around 3:50 a.m. on Thursday a tanker jackknifed on the outer loop of I-495 between Connecticut Avenue and Rockville Pike. The tanker leaked diesel fuel and the hot asphalt it was hauling.  The driver of the tanker was injured in the crash and was taken to the hospital.
