Our Mission
MCM’s mission is “to encourage and sponsor television programming and broadband media that meet community needs and offers forums for education and free expression.”
MCM’s vision is “to educate and empower Montgomery County residents by providing a means to creatively engage and more effectively connect the community through its media platforms.”
MCM’s programs and activities strive to enrich and improve the county’s residents quality of life by providing a community media center for them and NPOs and NGOs to create TV and broadband content that communicates their visions to all.
MONTGOMERY COMMUNITY MEDIA IN 4 SIMPLE WORDS: INFORM, CONNECT, EDUCATE, INNOVATE
MCM currently has 621 part-time volunteers primarily engaged in the production of television programs that are broadcast on-demand online.
MCM’s Volunteers annually provide 13,000+ hours of on-air content.
MCM reaches out in social media: YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flikr, Blip, and Google+. MCM has cross-linked all social media for viral impact. This cross-link includes MCM’s electronic newsletters.
In FY’11 MCM had 356 Self-Produced Productions. Those works included 54 Local Premieres. They were completed by MCM’s FT/PT team of 40. FY’11 works include: “7th Annual Silver Spring Jazz Fest,” “10th Annual Magical Montgomery Fest,” “2nd Annual Mid-Atlantic Jazz Fest,” “The Gandhi Brigade: Just Us Youth Media Fest”, “Takoma Park Folk Fest,” “Executive Awards for Excellence in the Arts & Humanities,” “Do and Go Fun Finder” on-air calendar, and the “Bethesda Row Arts Fest.”
Connect
Annually, MCM engages and/or partners with nearly 400 NPOs.
MCM also partners with peer nonprofit organizations in grants, including the National
Fatherhood Initiative, The Puppet Company and AHCMC. MCM is actively engaged in in-kind
trade with the Black Rock Center for the Arts.
MCM’s 621 volunteers and access-presenters contributed 3,217 works. Each FY’11 quarter on-air contained 120 program series created by County residents and organizations. Those productions include: “21 This Week,” and “Montgomery Week in Review” which each celebrated 1,000 episodes. “Backpack Beat,” “Glen Echo Park: Summer of Change,” “Artworks This Week,” “Musica Y Algo Mas,” “Revista Semenal Montgomery,” “Selam Ethiopia,” “Forward Motion,” “Deliteful Cooking,” “Traveltelevision, and the “Punjabi Community Hour.”
MCM compliments Montgomery County’s vibrant diversity through our features and broadcasts of Latino Heritage Month, the Montgomery County Fair, several music festivals, Black History Month, Asian Heritage Month and so very much more!

MCM trains residents in media literacy, production and distribution. MCM offers a wide variety of multimedia classes in field and studio productions to residents, NPOs and NGOs. These student volunteers are trained to utilize MCM’s equipment and resources to produce their own works for MCM channels and broadband presence. In FY’11 MCM had 904 students complete 71 classes; and, MCM issued 19 media certification types to 530 students. Classes and Certifications include: Video Basics, HD Camera Operations, Field Camera Operations, Editing Basics, Final Cut Pro Editing, Green Screen Editing, Inscriber Basics, Jib Operator, Studio Lighting, Soundtrack, Control Room Operations, Producer and Director training, Video to Web, and Backpack Journalism.
In FY’11 MCM partnered with the County Public Schools, youth activity centers, service/religious
organizations, recreation/service centers and youth/neighborhood clubs to offer students across
the County its Summer Backpack Journalism program and workshops.
MCM has held several training classes in local school/community youth centers. MCM also partners with Leisure World’s retirement living community and the Jewish Community Center to bring the aged its programs.
Innovate
MCM is working to improve in FY’13 the County’s digital literacy and expand its ability to deliver
flexible “digital learning” services to target County populations. MCM’s goals are a mobile Digital Lab that goes to where target residents live, new online courses, and courses in MCM’s classrooms and open visitor lab hours.
In FY’12 MCM also created the Citizen Journalism class, begun via Groupon, which compliments MCM’s Backpack Journalism classes.
