Orioles’ Game Postponed Due to Marlins’ Coronavirus Outbreak

The Baltimore Orioles game scheduled for Monday night against the Miami Marlins has been postponed due to a coronavirus outbreak. The Marlins received 13 positive coronavirus test results, only a day after four other players were sidelined with the virus. 11 of the newest positive COVID-19 tests were players, in addition to two coaches on the Marlins’ staff.

The Orioles flew to Miami last night after winning two of three games in their season opening series against the Red Sox in Boston. The Marlins never made it back to their home ballpark. The team is still in Philadelphia after receiving a combined 13 positive test results.

Orioles’ Manager Brandon Hyde had already expressed caution about the team’s trip to Miami, emphasizing the need for players to follow protocol and remain in their hotel. The Marlins’ outbreak represents an early inflection point for Major League Baseball, just five days into the shortened 60-game season. Unlike other major professional sports leagues, the MLB opted not to play their season in a “bubble.”

The Yankees-Phillies game has also been postponed. It is unclear whether the Marlins will be able to field a full roster in time to play against the Orioles in Miami on Tuesday. The teams are also scheduled to play a two-game series in Baltimore starting Wednesday.
