Thousands of Residents Lose Power During Afternoon Storm (Photos)

Over 16,000 Pepco customers in Montgomery County lost power during an afternoon thunderstorm on Sept. 12.

According to Pepco spokesperson Shelley Kudelka, crews are on scene assessing damage. Kudelka said a substation near Pooks Hill Road in Bethesda was knocked off line during the storm and about half of the outages are in the surrounding Bethesda area.

She said there are other pockets of Montgomery County also without power.

At 6 p.m., she said the number of outages was down to just about 14,000. She said there are no restoration estimates at this time.

Shortly before the storm, the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Montgomery County.

There are reports of flooded roadways, trees down and traffic signals out. Police are warning motorists to treat dark signals as a four way stop, unless controlled by an officer.
