Number Of Unemployment Claims Filed Continues to Decline

The number of residents filing for unemployment in Montgomery County continued to decline during the week ending on Aug. 1

More than 2,300 county residents filed initial claims for unemployment during the week ending on Aug. 1, which is a decrease of about 600 from the week ending on July 25.

There were 2,377 initial claims filed during the week ending on Aug. 1 by county residents, according to the Maryland Department of Labor. The prior week, 2,975 residents filed initial claims.

In Maryland, 18,268 residents filed initial unemployment claims during the week that ended Aug. 1. The previous week, 23,839 Maryland residents filed initial claims.

A month ago, slightly more than 3,500 county residents filed initial claims for unemployment. Statewide, 65,559 residents filed initial unemployment claims during the week that ended July 4.

The county’s unemployment rate in June was 8.1 percent, slightly lower than the state’s rate of 8.3 percent, according to the Maryland Department of Labor. The July figures are not available yet.
