Normal Operations Restored at Walter Reed Center in Bethesda

Normal operations are being restored to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center after an investigation into an alleged report of a gunshot on the campus Monday morning.

According to Montgomery County Police Capt. Paul Starks, police agencies conducted an “exhaustive” search of the campus and found no indication or evidence of a firearm as had been reported. Police say at 10:48 a.m., a call into the Emergency Operations Center reported a single shot heard on Walter Reed campus. That report was never confirmed.

Starks said officers “strategically” searched each floor and each office in the 20-story Building 1 on campus. Workers were in lockdown during the search that ended about 1:30 p.m.

Roads in the area that had been shut down during the incident have been reopened, however some residual traffic remains. Non-emergency patient care at the facility has been suspended for the day, according to the Department of the Navy.

Today’s incident comes just four days after a woman reported hearing possible gunshots at the Navy Yard in D.C. That report drew a massive response from police agencies, however there was no evidence of a shooting in that case.
