New Unemployment Claims Rise for Second Week in a Row
Initial claims for unemployment filed by Montgomery County residents rose slightly during the week that ended Dec. 12. Residents filed 1,579 initial claims compared to 1,403 initial claims filed during the week that ended Dec. 5, according to the Maryland Department of Labor (DOL).
Statewide, the number of initial claims filed last week also increased. During the week that ended Dec. 12, Marylanders filed 15,754 initial unemployment claims. During the week that ended Dec. 5, 15,361 Marylanders filed initial unemployment claims.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate in the United States was 6.7% in November. In Maryland, during the month of October, the unemployment rate was 7.8%, which was 42nd out of the 50 states.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor for the week ending Dec. 12, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 885,000, which marked an increase of 23,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 862,000. During November, 344,000 jobs were added across the country.
