New Park Planned Along Capital Crescent Trail

A new park will open soon along the Capital Crescent Trail, Montgomery Parks announced Thursday.

The River Road Park will feature a seating area, a pergola, plantings and maps. As a welcoming gateway to the trail, the park provides a green, restful place for travelers and neighbors alike.

Park construction is expected to begin in a month and the project should take about nine months, said Melissa Chotiner, parks spokeswoman.

The park is the product of Montgomery Parks, the Montgomery Parks Foundation and the Coalition for the Capital Crescent Trail.

The 11-mile Capital Crescent Trail runs from Bethesda to Georgetown, and it is one of the most popular trails in the nation. Bicycling commuters use it. Runners, walkers and cyclists also enjoy the trail for leisure.

The park will be in the open space adjacent to the bridge over River Road, where a new sign has been placed. While the base project has secured funding, the Montgomery Parks Foundation is seeking tax-deductible contributions to support additional features at the new park.

Foundation Executive Director Mike Nardolilli said the organization received enough funds to begin the project, additional donations will help enhance the planned amenities at the site.

Tax-deductible donations may be made to either the Coalition for the Capital Crescent Trail or to the Montgomery Parks Foundation. Interested donors are requested to designate their funds for the “River Road Park.”
