New Montgomery County Animal Shelter Opens This Weekend

dog flu  450 x 280  for sliderMontgomery County officials will hold an official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Animal Services and Adoption Center on March 1, at 10:30 a.m. at 7315 Muncaster Mill Road in Derwood.

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett, County Council President Craig Rice, Councilmembers Phil Andrews, Nancy Navarro and Montgomery County Police Chief Thomas Manger are expected to take part in the celebration, which will also include tours of the building. Other expected to participate, include Director of General Services David Dise, Director of the Animal Services Division Mary Healey, Councilmember Nancy Floreen, Maryland Senator Jennie Forehand, Maryland Delegates Charles Barkley, Tom Hucker, Ben Kramer and Aruna Miller; and President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States Wayne Pacelle.

According to a news release, brief tours of the new center will begin at 10 a.m. and will run through 12:30 p.m. on March 1.

The new state-of-the-art center is the home of the Police Department’s Animal Services Division and will also serve as a public adoption center and community education resource for animal care issues.

The entire first floor of the 49,193 gross-square-foot building will accommodate all animal care and housing areas and include a classroom and an on-site veterinary clinic. The grounds also include a walking trail, barn and bulk-food storage building. The buildings were designed to meet LEED Silver certification.

The public should note that the new Center will be closed for walk-in business and adoptions on Saturday, March 1. The new Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center opens to the public for business on Sunday, March 2 at noon. The Center will be operational for walk-in business and animals will be available for viewing and adoption.

The state-of-the-art facility is operated by the Montgomery County Police Department’s Animal Services Division and serves as the County’s only open-admissions animal shelter.

Programs and services offered at the new Center will include: adoptions, lost and found, pet licensing, field services, pet-owner and adopter support and foster and volunteer opportunities – with the anticipation of more program development to come.
