New Legislation Aims to Bring More Affordable Housing Near Transit Corridors

Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando discussed the “More Housing for More People” initiatives during a virtual media briefing on Tuesday. The two-related proposals aim to address the affordable housing challenges in the county.

The first proposal would help set standards regarding rent increases at properties within one mile of Metro, Purple Line, and MARC stations to ensure that unfair rent gouging doesn’t happen. The second proposal would  allow owners of R-60 zoned property located within one mile of a Metrorail station to build duplexes, townhouses, and multi-family structures within the current R-60 lot coverage.

Jawando says this is an effort to prevent gentrification while addressing the need for more affordable housing for hardworking county residents- especially those who rely on public transportation.

A public hearing for this legislation will be held on Feb. 9,  at 7:30 p.m.
