National Walkout by Students Expected Wednesday

Exactly one month after a school shooting in Parkland, Florida that killed 17 people, students from across the country are planning to walkout of school to stand in solidarity with the victims.

The event, organized by the Women’s March Network, calls for students, teachers, school administrators, parents and allies to participate in a national school walkout for 17 minutes at 10 a.m.

The goal of the national movement is to call on Congress to pass legislation geared towards tightening the gun laws.

Dozens of schools in Montgomery County are planning to walkout as early as 7:30 in the morning to head to the U.S. Capitol and the White House.

MCPS Superintendent Dr. Jack Smith issued a statement Monday encouraging students to work with school leaders to come up with alternatives to walking out from school.

In his letter, Smith said that “leaving school property can disrupt instruction for other students and pose a significant safety risk, especially in light of the increase in school threats.”
