Montgomery Preparing for Hurricane Irma (VIDEO)

As Hurricane Irma lumbers through Florida, Montgomery County emergency officials are watching its track and thinking about how it could affect the region.

“It’s traveling fairly slow. It’s churning across for a long period of time now so we’ve had a long period of time to watch and pay attention,” said Earl Stoddard, director of the county’s Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security.

Irma is expected to reach Maryland on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. The storm could produce bands of heavy rain as well as possible tornadoes.

Stoddard said the department is checking with other agencies to make sure they’re prepared.

Gov. Larry Hogan said the state also is watching Irma, to prepare for its effects here and to offer assistance to states that need help.
