Montgomery Posts Big Jump in Early Voting, But …

Montgomery County’s early voting data could be a case of a glass half full or half empty.

On the half full side, early voting increased about 91 percent from the 2014 primary, according to Maryland State Board of Elections data.

On the half empty side, early voting increased from just less than 3 percent of eligible voters in 2014 to less than 5.6 percent in 2018, according to state data.

Also on the half empty side, Montgomery County’s 5.6 percent was less than the state average of about 6.2 percent, according to the state. Prince George’s County had 40,807 voters turn out for early voting, or 7.7 percent, according to state data.

Montgomery County has more than 640,000 eligible voters. Prince George’s has 527,539 eligible voters.

The state also says the 6,525 early votes were cast at the Silver Spring Civic Building, the most cast of the 11 early voting centers in Montgomery. The civic building was the fourth most active in the state, according to the data, putting it behind two early voting centers in Prince George’s and one in Baltimore County.
