Montgomery Police Pledges To Release Hate Crime Data

Montgomery County police is one of 26 police forces across the country that has accepted a challenge from the Police Foundation for releasing hate crime information.

The information is available through the website the county operates to release data, datamontgomery. It can be viewed here.

The data show six incidents so far in 2018 and 122 in 2017.

The Police Foundation is a national, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that tries to advance policing through research, innovation and science.

A foundation statement said the Bureau of Justice Statistics found, in June 2017, that the United States averaged 250,000 hate crimes each year from 2004 to 2015.

Although hate crimes are harmful and serious offenses, they are often not well documented and underreporting is a serious challenge, the foundation said.
