Montgomery Parks Launches New Scholarship for Kids to Attend Summer Camps

Montgomery Parks has launched a new scholarship aimed to help send children to summer camp.

The Marye Wells-Harley Dream Camp Scholarship, named in honor of the former Montgomery Planning Board Commissioner, will be awarded to children ages 6 to 14 based on financial need, according to a news release.

“Summer camp is so important to a child’s development,” Michael F. Riley, director of Montgomery Parks, said. “It provides opportunities to grow emotionally, build social skills and have fun while being physically active. We recognize there are many families who cannot afford to send their children to summer camp. This scholarship pays tribute to the great work Marye did throughout her career, while also providing valuable experiences for young people in the county.”

Marye Wells-Harley served as Vice Chair of the Montgomery County Planning Board from 2009 until 2017. Prior to that, she was director of the Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation, where received five top awards from the National Recreation and Parks Association.

More than $5,000 has been donated to the scholarship program so far.

Applications for the scholarships are available on Montgomery Parks’ website.
