Montgomery Housing Partnership Builds Community Garden
Inspired by Michelle Obama’s healthy eating and community gardens initiative, Bruce Adams, Director of Montgomery County’s Office of Community Partnerships, had an idea that would help bring the community together this Spring.
Adams, along with Jose Gonzalez, a community organizer at the Montgomery Housing Partnership, decided to dig through the County to find an area that could serve as a place for a community garden.
The group chose the Halpine Hamlet apartment complex in Rockville and started the planning process.
Gonzalez gathered a group of residents in February to discuss the plan and interest in creating a space for a garden at the complex.
“He has been working with me and the residents. He really gets the community building possibilities of this project,” Adams said.
Since the meeting, Adams recruited Ruppert Landscaping and Sandy Spring Builders to build boxes for the garden.
The garden will be named “Sandy’s Garden,” after the original builder whose family, the Slavin’s, sold the property to the Montgomery Housing Partnership.
The Slavin family is providing financial support for the project.
“This is a wonderful community building partnership activity,” Adams said. “I am hoping that it can serve as an inspiration to be replicated around the County.”
The group will have a community picnic at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony with Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett at 1:30 p.m.
Following the ceremony, residents will plant vegetables for the season.
The garden is located at 5511 Halpine Place in Rockville.
