Montgomery County Students to Speak Up at a Town Hall Meeting
The Montgomery County Council will host a town hall meeting in Rockville to find out what issues most concern young residents. The meeting will take place at the Council Office Building on Oct. 15., and will begin at 7 p.m.
Some of the topics to be discussed in the meeting is school starting time, class size, access to new technologies, among others.
According to a press release, the event is open to high and middle school students from public and private institutions from around the county and local college students.
Montgomery County Council President Craig Rice said the youth town hall meetings have become learning experiences for both the Councilmembers and the students.
“The County Council funds the school system and many other programs which have a direct impact on our County’s youth, and this meeting is an invaluable opportunity to hear directly from them. We gain a unique perspective on the needs of our young residents, and we always take their feedback seriously. We want to hear what they have to say on a wide range of issues,” Rice said.
Attendees will have the chance to let councilmembers know how they feel about these issues and, have an opportunity to ask questions.
“So many major decisions concerning education—and students—are made by adults talking with other adults. But the students often have so much to offer that adults do not necessarily see. We are looking forward to learning about how they see their school experiences, whether that involves school starting times or even the food they are served in the cafeteria,” said Montgomery County Council Vice President George Leventhal.
The Council Office Building is located at 100 Maryland Avenue, and students are asked to RSVP by calling 240-777-7931. The meeting will take place in the council’s third floor hearing room, and a pre-meeting reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the building’s second-floor cafeteria.
