Montgomery County Students Honored at State House

17 students from Maryland – including five from Montgomery County – were honored Monday night at the Maryland State House.

The students were recognized for being finalists in the 2019 National History Day competition. The annual competition, which occurs at the University of Maryland, involves more than 3,000 students from around the world.

The group of five County students honored had been friends since middle school and worked together on their project.

In order to participate in the National History Day competition, students needed to have placed in the Maryland History Day competition at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Maryland History Day is a year-long educational program in which students create a project that reflects a historical topic of their choice in accordance with the annual theme.

More than 25,000 middle and high school student participants work over the course of the year on their projects. The event is coordinated by Maryland Humanities and is open to students in grades 6-12.

This year’s Maryland History Day competition will take place on May 2. The theme is Breaking Barriers. Students who place will advance to the National History Day competition from June 14-18.
