Montgomery County Seeks Nominations for Volunteer Service Awards (VIDEO)

Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett has announced that nominations are being accepted for the Montgomery Serves and the Neal Potter Path of Achievement awards which honor some of our County’s most dedicated volunteers.

The awards, along with the Roscoe Nix Distinguished Community Leadership Award, will be presented on April 27 at Imagination Stage in Bethesda. Organized by the Montgomery County Volunteer Center and sponsored by the Fund for Montgomery (FFM), the annual event highlights the good work of seniors, youth, individuals, businesses and community groups that help make Montgomery County a good place to live, work and play. For the third year, Andrea Roane, weekday morning anchor for WUSA 9, will serve as mistress of ceremonies.

“Montgomery County is the very special place it is today in large part because many extraordinary members of the public work every day through service in their community to make it special,” Leggett said in encouraging residents to nominate individuals, businesses and community groups for the awards. “This annual awards program recognizes the many dedicated, hard-working individuals who contribute so much to their community.”

Nominations are being sought from the public for two award categories:

• Neal Potter Path of Achievement Awards. In partnership with the Commission on Aging and “The Beacon Newspapers,” two residents aged 60 and above will be selected for their lifetime of volunteer service to the County. This annual award is named in memory of former County Councilmember, County Executive and longtime community activist Neal Potter.
• Montgomery Serves Awards. These awards recognize special volunteer accomplishments during the calendar year 2013 in four categories: Youth (individuals 18 years and under and/or youth groups); Business (businesses that engage their employees as community volunteers); Community Service – Individual and Community Service – Group (exemplary volunteer service by individuals of any age or community organizations).

Nominations for all categories will be accepted through Friday, Feb. 27 at 5 p.m. Additional information and nomination forms can be found at www.montgomeryserves.org or by calling the Montgomery County Volunteer Center at 240.777.2600 or email serviceawards@montgomerycountymd.gov. Winners are expected to be announced in mid-March.

The prestigious Roscoe Nix Distinguished Community Leadership Award was established by the County Executive to honor community icon Roscoe Nix, who gave a half century of service to Montgomery County as president of the Montgomery County Branch of the NAACP and as a member of the Montgomery County Board of Education. First presented in 2012, the Nix award is the County’s equivalent of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award. Honorees are selected annually by the County Executive.

The Montgomery Serves Awards’ event sponsor, the Fund for Montgomery, provides private funding for important community-building events like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, World of Montgomery Festival, Community Service Day and ethnic heritage events. The awards ceremony is hosted by Montgomery County through the Volunteer Center, with the assistance of the Corporate Volunteer Council of Montgomery County.

The event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited and reservations are required.
