Montgomery County Police Accepting Applications for Sept. Citizen Academy
Montgomery County police is accepting applications for the 57th Citizen Academy class, which increases resident awareness of police department functions.
The free academy is scheduled to begin Sept. 4, meeting on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The 15-week academy plans a graduation on or about Dec. 18. Participants are required to attend 12 of the 15 classes to be eligible for graduation.
Participants will learn about the role of the police officer in their communities.
The Citizen Academy has been in existence since 1994. Classes will be held at the Public Safety Training Academy at 8751 Snouffer School Road in Gaithersburg.

- Collision reconstruction unit
- Conflict negotiations
- Crime lab
- Crime prevention
- Criminal law/search & seizure
- Drug investigation/CDS identification
- DUI/underage drinking
- Emergency communications center
- Emergency response team
- Firearm safety
- Forensic services
- Gangs
- Internal Affairs Division
- Major Crimes
- Maryland traffic law
- Scams and fraud
Applications are being accepted on a first come, first served basis. The class is very popular and with a class limit of 40 participants, there is often a waiting list.
Once the session is full, all other applications will be held for potential enrollment in future academies.
The academy is open to anyone at least 18 years old who either lives or works in Montgomery County. A background check will be completed on all applicants.
To apply, complete the application and mail it to the address listed on the application.
The Academy also offers optional classes and tours including CPR class and a tour of the detention center.
Students are also encouraged to participate in the Department’s Ride-Along Program.
