Montgomery County Officials to Join Regional Leaders on Trip to Cuba
As MyMCMedia first reported; Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett along with Montgomery County Councilmembers Nancy Navarro and Roger Berliner, will join the Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GWHCC) for an exploratory mission to Cuba from Feb. 20-25.
According to a news release, the purpose of the trip is to create an opportunity for potential economic and cultural partnerships with Cuba.
“For 40 years, the Chamber has dedicated its work to building innovative partnerships that advance Latino business ownership and expand their reach into new markets at home and abroad,” Angela Franco, president of the GWHCC, said. “We are hopeful this mission will be a start to securing future economic and community benefits for the region, its residents, and its businesses,” Franco said.
“I look forward to exploring ways that Montgomery County residents and businesses can connect with Cuba and with our regional partners to advance our mutual interests,” Leggett said.
Montgomery County’s Director of the Office of Community Partnerships Bruce Adams and Claudia Canales, administrative assistant to the County Executive, will also be a part of the delegation. Leaders from Virginia and Washington D.C. will represent the region on the trip as well; including D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Secretary of Commerce and Trade for the Commonwealth of Virginia Maurice Jones.
While in Havana the delegation will tour local schools and health facilities. Delegation members will also meet with Cuban government officials, including; Havana Mayor Marta Hernández Romero, Cuba’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla and Minister of Foreign Trade Investment Rodrigo Malmierca Díaz; as well as with U.S Ambassador Jeffrey Delaurentis.
