Montgomery County Hosts Safety Forum to Honor World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Montgomery County will commemorate World Elder Abuse Awareness Day with its ninth annual Senior Safety Forum. The event will be held Thursday June 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Holiday Park Senior Center. Senior citizens, their family members, and other caregivers are encouraged to attend the free event and learn more about county resources for elders. Information about personal and financial safety as well as ways to avoid cyber-crimes will be provided.

Abuse of the elderly is becoming a growing concern both nationally and locally in Montgomery County. According to the 2016 U.S. Census American Community Survey, 20.7% of Montgomery County residents are 60 years and over. The purpose of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by addressing the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes that affect elderly abuse, according to USC Center on Elder Mistreatment.

Several county agencies that work to protect elderly community members are hosting the forum.  Representatives from the Montgomery County Elder/Vulnerable Adult Abuse Task Force will deliver the forum’s keynote address. Speakers are expected to make presentations on red flags of abuse, consumer protection issues and Montgomery County resources for seniors.

The forum will feature raffle prizes, free bag lunches, personal mobile device tech assistance as well as live musical entertainment. Police will be accepting unused and unwanted prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications from elders and their family members.
