Montgomery County Honors Veterans With Solemn Ceremonies, Joyous Concerts

Veterans Day is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which brought an end to World War I in 1918. The armistice went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Veterans Day is a federal holiday to honor all veterans, particularly living veterans. This year Veterans Day is Saturday, November 11. Numerous ceremonies and events are planned in Montgomery County in recognition of our Veterans.

Here are some events in Montgomery County to honor Veterans:

Saturday, November 11

  • The city of Gaithersburg will honor local veterans by hosting its Annual Veterans Day Observance at 11 a.m. at the City Hall Concert Pavilion. City officials and members of local veterans groups will participate in a solemn wreath laying ceremony followed by a reception inside City Hall.Major Anne Barlieb, Combat Helicopter Pilot and Wounded Warrior will address the gathering. Major Barlieb deployed to Iraq for 18 months in support of Operation Freedom during the surge in 2007-2008 and again to Qatar in support of Operation New Dawn in 2010. During her 13 years in service, Major Barlieb received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Parachutist Badge, Aviator Badge, and Combat Action Badge.

    The city of Gaithersburg is asking the community to support the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless (MCCH) who work to provide homeless Veterans in our area with safe, stable and affordable homes.

  • The city of Rockville’s annual ceremony in honor of the men and women who served in the nation’s armed forced takes place at 11 a.m. at the American Legion Post 86 located at 2013 Veirs Mill Road in Rockville. American Legion Post 86 will lead the wreath laying ceremony followed by a reception.

    Rockville resident and former Marine Enrique Mazon Jr. will address the gathering. Mazon served in the United States Marine Corps from July 2005–August 2009. During this time, he was stationed in Camp Pendleton, California, assigned to the 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, Headquarters Company, 1st Marine Division, serving as an administrative clerk for a unit of approximately 1,300 Marines and sailors. In August 2006, he was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 3rd Low Air Altitude Defense Battalion, 3rd Marine Air Wing, Marine Control Group – 38. His military decorations and awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Navy Unit Commendation Medal with one star, the Iraqi Campaign Medal with one campaign star, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

  • Maryland Natural Resources is hosting a Veterans Day Hike on the Greenway Trail. Meet with park staff and military veterans for a hike on the Greenway Trail from 10 a.m. to noon. This is an out-and-back hike, with a halfway point for relaxing near Great Seneca Creek. Hike will last approximately 2 hours.

  • The Heart of Maryland women’s barbershop chorus presents “Let Freedom Ring!”  tribute to Veterans and active duty military.  The chorus is a Sweet Adelines women’s chorus singing 4-part a cappella harmony in the barbershop style. Featured guests include Misfire, a men’s Barbershop Harmony Society quartet, The Fugitive Brass Quintet, and Gottaswing Dancers. The concert takes place at F. Scott Fitzerald Theatre, 603 Edmonston Drive, Rockville from 1 to 3:3o p.m. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased online, here.

 

  • National Medical Museum Veterans Day Tour takes place at 1 p.m.  This docent-led introductory tour highlights the remarkable changes in American medicine over the past 150 years, with a special focus on military medicine. The National Museum of Health and Medicine is located at 2500 Linden Lane in Silver Spring. The tour is free, reservations are recommended but not required.

 

Monday, November 13

County Executive Ike Leggett is a special guest at the Veterans Open House from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Executive Office Building in Rockville. The event will feature a brief program and refreshments.

Tuesday, November 14

The 9th Annual Tribute to America’s Veterans concert takes place at the Silver Spring Civic Building from 7 p.m. The free concert features the music of Rafael Ortiz y Tumbao Urbano.
