Montgomery County First to Join the AARP-WHO Age Friendly Communities (PHOTO)

Montgomery County will become the first county in Maryland to join the AARP-World Health Organization Age Friendly Communities and the second to join the BrightFocus Foundation Dementia-Friendly America Initiative at County Executive Ike Leggett’s Summit on Aging Thursday in Silver Spring. The summit is part of the county’s efforts to ensure Montgomery County is a community for a lifetime as set forth in the Senior Agenda adopted by the county in December, 2012.

summit-on-agingThe Summit will open with a ten-minute video highlighting accomplishments over the past several years. The keynote speaker is Dr. Fernando Torres-Gil, Board of Trustees, AARP, Professor of Social Welfare and Public Policy, Director, Center for Policy Research on Aging, Luskin School of Public Affairs, UCLA.

The luncheon speaker is Jeff Kramer, Executive Director of Strategic Alliances at Verizon.

The afternoon presenter is Sandy Markwood, Executive Director of the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

During morning and afternoon breakout sessions, participants will help develop recommendations that will serve as future planning guidelines in the areas of civic engagement, communications, employment, health and wellness, home- and community-based support services, housing, safety and transportation.
